NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One of Nashville's "Most Wanted" fugitives is behind bars about a month after allegedly breaking into a home and shooting at one of the residents in what police are calling a "case of mistaken identity."

Specialized Investigations Division detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department were reportedly able to track 27-year-old James Briggs down on the night of Wednesday, Aug. 28. Police said he was arrested at a location off South Street.

The arrest came just hours after Briggs was added to the police department's "Top 10 Most Wanted" list for his alleged involvement in the July 25 burglary of a Sylvan Street home.

According to officials, Briggs entered the victims' apartment at 1:30 a.m. after removing an air conditioning unit in the bedroom window. Once inside, Briggs reportedly began shooting at one of the residents.

However, Briggs seemed to realize he was in the "wrong house" after the victim told him his family, including four grandchildren, were in the other room. The victim told police Briggs yelled out the window to a second suspect, "wrong house, wrong house," and fled.

Authorities said no one was injured by the gunfire. Elijah Kodjo, 33, was later identified as the second suspect accompanying Briggs.

Briggs was charged with aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, felony weapon possession, and six counts of reckless endangerment. Police said he was booked into jail and, as of Thursday, Aug. 29, is being held on a $195,000 bond.

He is now among at least 130 "Most Wanted" suspects who have been taken into custody since the program was launched in October 2022. Investigators have largely attributed the program's success to tips they've received from the public.

Kodjo is currently wanted on outstanding warrants for aggravated burglary and aggravated assault. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
