NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Happiness is hard to come by in the Volunteer State, according to a new study.

WalletHub recently released its 2024 Happiest States in America rankings, proving where you live may have an impact on how happy you are.

The list examined 50 states across three key factors: Emotional and Physical Well-being, Work Environment and Community and Environment. Experts then evaluated those factors across 30 different metrics to determine the "happiest" states.

Tennessee ranked among the unhappiest states, landing at No. 47 on the list. The state ranked above West Virginia, Arkansas and Louisiana.

According to the study, Tennessee has the highest share of adult depression compared to any other state on the list. In fact, the state's share of adult of depression is two times higher than Hawaii's, which is considered the happiest state.

However, the Volunteer State ranked in the top 25 when it came to work environments, landing at No. 24 on the list. WalletHub said this factor weighed the total number of hours worked, commute times, job security, and share of households earning annual incomes above $75,000.
