Pedestrian killed in crash on Broadway crosswalk

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A 58-year-old pedestrian was hit and killed by a vehicle while crossing the street in downtown Nashville early Saturday morning, police said.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said Michael O'Connell, from New Jersey, was crossing the street around 1 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 12th Avenue South and Broadway when he was struck. The pedestrian walk light was reportedly on at the time.

According to authorities, the driver of a Dodge pickup truck, identified as a 36-year-old man from Waverly, turned left onto Broadway from 12th Avenue South during a green light but failed to yield to O'Connell.

O'Connell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene told officers the Dodge driver was speeding and "spinning the pickup's tires" just before the incident, officials said. He reportedly left the scene and then returned shortly afterward, but he did not show any signs of impairment.
