Weekend rain provides some drought relief for Middle Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Even though multiple Middle Tennessee events were canceled or postponed due to this weekend's wet weather, meteorologists said the rain was much needed.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), less than half an inch of precipitation fell at Nashville International Airport in October.

"As we go through the month, we'll just continue to monitor these, and we should see some relief, but we're going to need quite a bit more [precipitation], especially for those eastern counties or southeastern counties, before they start seeing improving conditions," said NWS Meteorologist Caleb Cravens.

The weekly U.S. drought monitor shows moderate to extreme drought conditions across Middle Tennessee, especially in Marshall, Bedford, and Lincoln counties. While those localities haven't seen as much rain with this weekend system, Cravens said even a few inches will help in moderately dry zones.

"We've actually seen a pretty heavy swath of [precipitation], around three to four inches, basically from Dickson to northwest Williamson County and southwest all the way down towards Alabama," he said.

We're not in growing season anymore, but according to experts, every little bit of wet weather we see over the winter is critical because it helps saturate the soil for the following year and ensure ample water supply year round.
