SUMNER COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff at a Sumner County home.
It happened off South Tunnel Road in Portland Thursday afternoon. South Tunnel Road is where several residents said that they moved to escape the chaos of city life.
"It's a pretty typical rural area," resident Gaylea McDougal told News 2. "...We're a pretty tight-knit community and it's pretty peaceful most of the time."
The peace and quiet isn't what McDougal rushed home to in the middle of her work day, though. A neighbor, identified by deputies as Erik Wright, barricaded himself in his home after a domestic situation. Officers blocked off part of the street for hours.
McDougal's teenage son was home alone.
"He knew to lock up and take all the necessary precautions, but he was a little bit unnerved, like 'What's going on? Is everybody okay?'" McDougal said.
McDougal added that she did not know much about Wright.
"The only thing that I know about him is that he likes to shoot assault rifles pretty late at night, so you can hear just a —," McDougal said, imitating the sound of gunfire.
Sumner County deputies said that the woman involved in the domestic situation made it out safely. As of publication, Wright is in custody.
"We have animals. We have dogs and chickens and children and family and other neighbors that we care about a lot, so it's always really concerning."
Investigators haven't immediately released any additional details about the standoff, but McDougal added she was grateful that nobody was injured.
"Hopefully, in the future, if we have unstable people that own assault weapons, maybe that will be looked at a little bit differently," McDougal added.
