Man in custody after locking himself inside Montgomery County church, deputies say

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Deputies responded to a church in Montgomery County early Friday morning after a man walked into the building and locked himself inside. 

According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were sent to LifePoint Church on Friday, Dec. 6 after receiving a report about an unknown man who had entered the building.

Law enforcement reportedly cleared the church building and found that the man had locked himself inside a pantry. 

With the assistance from Clarksville police and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), deputies took the man — identified as 35-year-old Jose Salvador Martinez — into custody.

Officials reported Martinez would not communicate with negotiators and became "physically resistant and combative" when deputies pushed the pantry's door open.

The 35-year-old man reportedly entered the church after crashing his vehicle nearby. However, it remains unclear why he entered the church and locked himself inside the pantry.

According to deputies, charges are pending following the completion of the investigation.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information associated with Martinez is asked to call Sgt. Inman at (931) 648-0611.
