Strong storms expected early Wednesday

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Our third and final system in the recent "parade of storms" will usher in another Arctic blast to end this week. Before that colder air arrives, this final system will bring more rain and the risk of severe thunderstorms to our region late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

The Storm Prediction Center has a Marginal Risk (level 1/5) for areas west of Interstate 65. The timeframe is from after 10 p.m. Tuesday through 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The overall storm risk will be heavy rain. However, within stronger storms that could pose a severe risk, wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are possible. The tornado risk is focused on counties near the Tennessee River.

Future Tracker has our Tuesday mainly dry but cloudy. A few showers are possible near the Tennessee and Alabama state line, where the front stalls out. This evening, the front lifts northward as a warm front, bringing back a few storms through late evening. It will be the early morning hours of Wednesday that feature the best chance for strong storms, mostly west of I-65.

Between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., storms will increase near the Tennessee River and move east. These will pose a risk of heavy rain, wind gusts, and an isolated tornado. As storms move east after sunrise, the severe weather risk will decrease, but heavy rain and general storms will continue. Rain ends late Wednesday afternoon, and temperatures drop to the low 50s and 40s in the late afternoon hours.

Another 1-2 inches of rain is possible. This could cause additional minor flooding on some roadways and nearby creeks/streams.
