Which state sent the most people to Tennessee in 2023?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — It's no secret to anyone that Tennessee has experienced a surge in growth.

The U.S. Census Bureau's 2023 American Community Survey helps paint a picture about where the previous homes of these new residents. The survey found that of the more than seven million people who lived in Tennessee in 2023, an estimated 90% did not move within the past year.

However, Tennessee saw about 200,000 residents move from other states and Puerto Rico. The top ten included:

From the U.S. Census Bureau

Washington, D.C.; Hawaii; Rhode Island; Wyoming and New Hampshire sent the fewest amount of residents to the Volunteer State in 2023, the data revealed.

In 2022, the list was surprisingly similar. Florida, California, Georgia, Texas and Illinois made the top five.

News 2 previously reported that North American Moving Services named Tennessee as one of the top five states for migration in 2024, too. Specifically, Nashville has been a magnet.
