CHEATHAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — Two people are dead after a vehicle driving in the wrong direction collided head-on with another car on Interstate 24 early Friday morning in Cheatham County.
The incident occurred in the westbound lanes near mile marker 29 just before 2:30 a.m., hours before a winter storm arrived in the area.
According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 38-year-old Joshua Tregoning was driving a Kia Optima eastbound while in the westbound lanes of I-24.
A Hyundai Elantra driven by a 17-year-old girl with two passengers — aged 18 and 16 — was traveling westbound in the correct direction of travel.
An investigation from the THP found the Kia struck the Hyundai head-on, according to reports. The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead following the crash. THP reported that the 17-year-old was wearing a seatbelt at the time, however, Tregoning was not.
The two teen passengers of the Hyundai, who were not wearing seatbelts, were also injured in the crash.
Detours were set up to route traffic around the crash scene. Motorists were able to exit at mile marker 31, which is New Hope Road, and take 41A north to Highway 49W. The roadway reopened before 10 a.m.
