PORTLAND, Tenn. (WKRN) — A man has been charged following a deadly crash during a sheriff's office pursuit in Portland on Friday night, according to law enforcement.
The Sumner County Sheriff's Office said the crash occurred just after 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31 near Academy Road and State Route 109.
According to a report from Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), 23-year-old Nathaniel Mills was driving a 2012 Dodge Ram southbound on Academy Road while trying to flee from Sumner County deputies.
A 2003 Ford Explorer — driven by 41-year-old Nathan Harper — was headed northbound on the same road when the Dodge reportedly crossed the center line and crashed into the Ford head-on.
The Dodge then drove off the right side of the road and hit a ditch. The Ford overturned and landed in the road, according to THP.
Harper was pronounced dead after the collision, officials said. Meanwhile, Mills was injured, but THP did not share details about the nature of those injuries.
Authorities said neither Tennessee man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
THP said Mills is charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. No additional information was immediately released.
