PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is conducting an investigation into a deadly shooting involving law enforcement in Putnam County early Monday morning.
According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), around 1:30 a.m., Algood Police Department (APD) officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop along Highway 111 on a silver Dodge Dart for speeding and swerving into other lanes. The vehicle reportedly refused to stop, beginning a pursuit that prompted assistance from PCSO.
During the pursuit, the Dodge driver allegedly brandished an item that appeared to be a gun, threw items from the vehicle and rear-ended a deputy patrol car.
The Dodge driver reportedly drove into a wooded median on Interstate 40 West near mile marker 295 and stopped. Both APD and PCSO reported officers and deputies then exchanged gunfire with the suspect. The TBI said the reason for the escalated response remains under investigation.
According to PCSO, the suspect was "taken down and apprehended." The individual was transported to Cookeville Regional Medical Center, where they died. No law enforcement officials were injured in the incident.
An investigation site has been established on I-40. No additional information was available as the investigation continues.
