NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Spring cleaning has started in Nashville's Percy Priest neighborhood.

The Metro Beautification Commissioner for District 29 told News 2 the trash has just kept piling up.

"I haven't seen much of a change this year so far compared to last year, as far as the number of dumpings," District 29 Beautification Commissioner, Greg Dunigan, said.

Metro cleanup crews often find mattresses, couches and other furniture abandoned on the side streets or in wooded areas. Resident Michelle Vetter told News 2 that furniture has been an eyesore. However, this weekend two community cleanup events have been scheduled to help address trash in the area.

According to the Nashville Department of Transportation, people submitted one thousand complaints to Hub Nashville last year. The Tennessee Department of Transportation said last December that at any given time, there are about 88 million pieces of litter on the state's roadways.

"That is the frustrating part for me is that it's something that could be minimized by just basic human behavior," NDOT Administration Service Manager JD Lane said.

To combat dumping in the Percy Priest neighborhood, a bulk item drop-off has been scheduled for Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at Compton's Foodland, which is at 2808 Old Smith Springs Road.

"Last year, we had 75 vehicles come through to drop off," Dunigan said.

This will be followed by litter cleanup efforts by the Nashville Mayor's office and NDOT.

"Everybody wants to live in an area that's safe and that's clean," Vetter said.
