NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) - A Metro police officer was seriously injured in a deadly head-on crash early Wednesday morning on Bell Road.
The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said the crash happened at around 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, July 10 near the intersection of Bell Road and Mt. View Road.

According to investigators, Homicide Sgt. Trevor VonDohlen was driving his Ford Edge police SUV when a Toyota Camry veered into his lane of travel, causing a head-on crash. The driver of the Camry was identified as 26-year-old Carlos D. Atilano of Antioch. He died at the scene.

Police said the investigation shows the Camry was traveling south on Bell Road toward the interstate when, for reasons unknown, it drove over the right curb, veered back to the left and into a northbound travel lane in which VonDohlen was driving.

At the time of the crash, police said VonDohlen was on his way to Creekview Drive to supervise the investigation into a reported suicide. His emergency equipment was not activated.

VonDohlen, 37, is a 12-year veteran of the MNPD. He is currently hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
