CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- A motorcyclist is dead after being hit by a vehicle that was heading the wrong way on Interstate 24 in Clarksville Sunday evening, according to officials.
Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) said the incident happened at approximately 5:19 p.m. on Sunday, July 14 at mile marker 3 on I-24 West.
Shortly before 5:45 p.m., the Clarksville Police Department announced officers were on the scene of a "crash with injuries" at the same spot on the interstate, where all westbound lanes were blocked until after 10 p.m., based on the Tennessee Department of Transportation's online traffic map.
According to THP, a 2016 Jeep Patriot was traveling eastbound in a westbound lane on I-24 while a 2024 Kawasaki ZX6 was heading westbound in the same lane. The SUV reportedly hit the motorcycle head-on.
Authorities said the Jeep ran off the right side of the road after impact, entered a yaw, and came to a stop facing west in the middle of the road. Meanwhile, the motorcycle came to rest on the right shoulder, facing east.
The operator of the Kawasaki -- identified by officials as 21-year-old Ethan Tran of Tennessee -- died from his injuries.
The driver of the Jeep -- 68-year-old Christopher Mulwa of Tennessee -- was wearing his seatbelt, but he was injured in the crash, THP said. He is reportedly charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the incident.
Police diverted traffic off I-24 at exit 4 while THP investigated the incident. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes. All lanes of traffic have since reopened.
No additional details have been released about the crash.
