MADISON, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities have charged a man with leaving the scene of a crash that killed a pedestrian in Madison over the weekend.
The crash took place on Sunday, July 21, at approximately 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of Myatt Drive and Roosevelt Avenue, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD).
Court documents state medics with the Nashville Fire Department pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.
Shortly after the crash, a MNPD detective reportedly determined that the vehicle involved fled from the scene due to the brake caliber scratching the roadway.
Detectives said they found a purple 2013 Nissan Armada in the 500 block of Canton Pass, which had "heavy front-end damage" and matched the suspect vehicle description.
At the home, police said they spoke to 43-year-old Sterling Jenkins. He allegedly told officers that he was traveling on Myatt Drive toward Gallatin Pike N. when he hit something with his vehicle but was unsure what he hit.
Jenkins was then taken to the Madison police station to speak with a crash investigator as officers worked to obtain video footage of the incident, officials said.
According to court documents, surveillance footage from the Thorntons in the 300 block of Myatt Drive captured Jenkins stop and get out of his vehicle to assess the damage.
During an interview with a crash investigator, Jenkins allegedly stated that he hit something on Myatt Drive and went home without reporting the crash.
Jenkins was taken into custody and charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death, failure to render aid and failure to file a report.
No other information about the deadly crash was immediately released.
