NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — A self-defense claim in a July shooting that claimed the life of a 16-year-old is being investigated, according to Metro Police.

Jawaun Jones was shot and killed with his own gun on July 6 after a fight on Antioch Pike, officials said. On Wednesday morning, officers arrested 19-year-old Misael Garcia.

Garcia was recorded by a surveillance camera jumping a fence following the shooting, police said. He was seen walking on Antioch Pike Wednesday morning when South Precinct officers recognized him. Garcia reportedly admitted to being involved in the shooting.

In an interview with homicide detectives, Metro police said Garcia claimed that he shot Jones in self-defense. However, that assertion is under investigation by both Nashville police and the District Attorney's office.

Garcia was charged with evidence tampering after admitting to discarding the pistol following the fatal shooting. As of publication, he is being held on a $3,200 bond.
