NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Federal agencies will soon begin enforcing new rules regarding identification for passengers on domestic flights and visitors to certain government buildings.
Starting May 7, 2025, anyone 18 years of age and older will be required to have a Real ID or a passport to board commercial flights and to enter military bases, nuclear power plants and certain federal buildings.
According to the Tennessee Department of Homeland Security, Tennesseeans are not required to get a Real ID for identification purposes such as driving, voting, purchasing alcohol and cigarettes, or entering federal courts, post offices and hospitals.
Real IDs are distributed in person at Driver Services Centers or participating County Clerks offices and cost the same as a regular driver's license or photo ID.
At the time of registration, Tennesseeans need proof of U.S. citizenship, including a birth certificate or valid passport, proof of the individual’s full social security number and two proofs of Tennessee residency. It is also necessary to bring legal documents supporting any recent name changes.
