NOLENSVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — On Thursday, city leaders broke ground on a $200 million development for Nolensville's town square.

The development marks the beginning of Nolensville's first public square since the city's 1797 founding, according to Nolensville city leaders.

"This groundbreaking is a significant milestone for the town and the culmination of a multitude of steps that were taken to reach this important day," assistant town manager Chuck Downham said in a press release. "The project will provide 70,000 square feet of commercial space, over 400 residential units, and a variety of gathering and civic places that make it unique in terms of development, not only here in Nolensville but throughout the Nashville area."

The 27-acre development will also preserve half of the land as green and open space.

"This place has such history," commissioner Kate Cortner said during the groundbreaking ceremony. "As we watch the construction unfold, what I see is the future I hope for Nolensville, really seeing memories being made and our community unifying through this process."

Additionally, the historic Nolensville Town Cemetery will be preserved by this project. The city's storm water management system will be improved as well. Thursday's ceremony brought together multiple generations of Nolensville residents, from families who owned the land previously to members of development teams that will shape the city's future.
