CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating after a man, who was reportedly armed with a handgun, was shot and killed by Cumberland County Sheriff's Office deputies.
The incident that led to the shooting happened early Saturday morning at a home in the 100 block of Scott Creek Road in Crossville.
The TBI said deputies responded to the home because of a report that shots had been fired. In the driveway, they encountered a man, identified as 22-year-old Rodolfo Daniel Lima, who was allegedly armed with a handgun.
Although the deputies gave several commands for Lima to drop his weapon, he refused to comply and fired at authorities, according to the TBI. Then, at least one deputy reportedly fired at Lima, striking and killing him. No law enforcement officers were injured in the shooting.
The TBI was asked to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting by the 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway.
"Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for his further review and consideration," the bureau said in a statement. "The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer's actions were justified in these matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement."
