MNPD: Woman killed in 'apparent' hit-and-run crash in South Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) -- Authorities are investigating an elderly woman's death following what they described as an "apparent" hit-and-run crash in South Nashville.

The Metro Nashville Police Department said officers from its South Precinct responded to Wingate Avenue near Sunrise Avenue around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15 after a nearby resident found the woman laying in the roadway.

The woman -- tentatively identified by officials as an 83-year-old Nashvillian -- was brought to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Medical Examiner is still working to positively identify her.

According to police, the Crash Investigation Unit's preliminary investigation indicates that an unknown vehicle struck the woman on Wingate Avenue and fled the scene.
