Why do otters love to play in the snow?

MT. JULIET, Tenn. (WKRN) — News 2 has introduced you to the otters on Old Hickory Lake before when they were captured playing in Ann Shapiro's backyard.

In fact, even ABC News' aired video of the creatures playing in the snow during Middle Tennessee's snowstorm in 2024. The otters had as much fun as the kids frolicking in the snow!

Then, in November, the family of otters were spotted again playing with a small swimming pool that floated up to Shapiro's dock, which she retrieved out of the water.

The otters seem to really enjoy playing on Shapiro's dock along on Old Hickory Lake. In fact, that's where they went after Friday's snowfall. A video captured how much personality the creatures have.

Like puppies, you can see that they really enjoy playing with each other. News 2's Davis Nolan asked Barry Cross with the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) about their playful behavior.

"Otters are very playful animals. They are a semi-aquatic animal here in Tennessee. They play, but that play has meaning for them," explained Cross. "They are actually socializing, building stronger bonds. The young are learning hunting through that playful activity. To us, it just looks like they're having a great time, and they are!"

One thing's for sure, they sure are entertaining!
