NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities are investigating a shooting involving a Metro police officer and a man linked to a stolen vehicle investigation in Madison overnight.

Just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to Cumberland Crossing Apartments on Rio Vista Drive to investigate a vehicle that was stolen Sunday during a carjacking on Cheyenne Boulevard.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), an armed 20-year-old man exited the stolen sedan and was confronted by two detectives.

In body camera footage from the incident, officers can be seen chasing the man as he runs up the complex stairs before they opened fire. The man fell to the ground after about four shots were fired.

Special agents with the Tennessee Bureau Investigation (TBI) said a preliminary investigation indicates that the 20-year-old produced a handgun after exiting the vehicle.

Officers reportedly made multiple commands for the 20-year-old to drop the weapon, but the situation escalated, which resulted in officers firing upon the man.

Officials said the 20-year-old was transported to Skyline Medical Center for treatment. No additional information on his condition was immediately shared. The TBI added no officers were hurt in the incident.

The shooting is being investigated by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and MNPD.

"TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for his further review and consideration," wrote the agency. "The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer’s actions were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement."

No additional details were immediately released.
