NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — One person is dead after a shooting in Antioch early Sunday morning, but authorities are reviewing a self-defense claim in the case.
The incident was reported in the 100 block of Denise Drive just before 3 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2.
The Metro Nashville Police Department said the investigation shows a group of friends was returning home from a birthday celebration when 39-year-old Maurice Blackmun assaulted a relative outside the home and a 19-year-old tried to intervene.
According to officials, witnesses said everyone went inside the home, where Blackmun started confronting the 19-year-old. Blackmun allegedly put the 19-year-old in a chokehold, followed him to the living room, and repeatedly threatened violence against him and other witnesses.
Law enforcement said the 19-year-old pointed a handgun at Blackmun and told him to get away from him before he fired once, hitting Blackmun. The 39-year-old died at the scene.
Authorities said no charges have been filed against the 19-year-old in connection with this case.
According to police, the fatal shooting investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office at its conclusion.
No additional information has been released about this deadly incident.
