NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Tennessee State Rep. Gloria Johnson has won the Democratic primary election for U.S. Senate and will face Sen. Marsha Blackburn in November.
The retired special education teacher, current state representative and member of the "Tennessee Three" defeated a contested primary with about two-thirds of the vote, besting Memphis environmental activist Marquita Bradshaw, Nashville NAACP President Lola Denise Brown and West Tennessee middle school teacher Civil Miller-Watkins.
Johnson made national headlines in 2023 as a member of the "Tennessee Three," a group of Democratic state lawmakers who faced expulsion from the state house after breaking House rules following the Covenant School shooting. Both her cohorts, Reps. Justin Jones (D-Nashville) and Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) were expelled by the body, but Johnson survived her expulsion vote by one vote.
